Airport:  CYWG - Winnipeg Int'l Apt, Manitoba, Canada 

 

CYWG is the only international airport serving the Manitoba province of Canada.  Its central longitudinal location within Canada (and equal distant to destinations on opposing ocean coasts of Canada or the United States), make Winnipeg a main feeder into Canada especially when travelling on to the more remote provinces of Nunavut or the Northwest Territories.

Winnipeg was opened in 1928 and was the first international airport with Northwest Airways (later Airlines) connecting Canada to North Dakota.  By 1935 they were running routes connecting Winnipeg with Grand Forks, Fargo, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago.  The airport became a modern municipal airport in 1936, but then came under military control in 1940 for WW2.  It remained under military control until 1997 when it was returned to the Winnipeg Airports Authority, at which point the airport was renamed to “International”.  

As a central hub to feed the more remote locations in Canada, Winnipeg Airport has a vast postal facility and cargo warehouse to stage mail and air freight destined for other parts of Manitoba and up into Nunavut.  The airport has two runways, one of which measures 11,000 to better accommodate heavy cargo aircraft.
